  • May I attend a class if I’m menstruating?
There are specific sequences for this time of the month which consist primarily of restorative poses. There are some poses that are definitely to be avoided while menstruating such as inversions and closed abdominal twists, unsupported backbends and hand balancing poses. According to Geeta Iyengar ” During menstruation, if one does inversions the blood flow will be arrested. Those who tried to do it out of enthusiasm or callousness will have noticed that the flow stops abruptly. This is certainly not good for health since it may lead to fibroids, cysts, endemetriosis, and cancer, damaging the system.”
  • What if I suffer from irregular menstruation? Amenorrhoea (no menstrual periods) or Hypomenorrhea (scanty periods) or Menorrhagia (abnormally heavy flow)?
Iyengar yoga makes it possible to create a practice that is tailored to specific situations to improve menstruation and reproductive health. You should talk to your teacher about it.
  • May I eat before class?
Students should come to class on an empty stomach or four hours after a heavy meal and an hour after a light snack.
  • I’ve done some yoga before. What level class should I attend?
    Either Introductory or Beginners.
  • Do I need props at home if attending zoom classes?
Iyengar yoga is about innovating and being creative with what you have on hand. You can use items like blankets, cushions, dining chair etc. You will be guided in the class how to make the best use of what you have. If required, you can also purchase original Iyengar yoga online.
